Der Holzschnitt ist ein starkes künstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel des Expressionismus. Zentrale Themen des Expressionismus sind u. a. politische und soziale Themen sowie emotionale Aspekte einzelner Individuen. Inspiration wird im expressionistischen Holzschnitt überraschend und spontan umgesetzt, grafische Klarheit und Abstraktionsvermögen in der Vereinfachung zeichnen dieses Medium aus. Als eine Hommage an den expressionistischen Holzschnitt sollen die auf Zeitungspapier gemalten und collagierten Arbeiten von Ahmed Borai gesehen werden. Sie sind eine malerische Liebeserklärung an dieses künstlerische Ausdrucksmittel. Die von Ahmed Borai entwickelte Technik „paperplaining“ erlaubt dem Künstler ein spontanes Malen auf Zeitungspapier. Die bemalten Zeitungen werden auf Zeichenkarton grafisch collagiert. So entstehen die an einen Holzschnitt angelehnten Arbeiten, grafisch-malerische Unikate.
